Mosaics from the Norman and Early English Period were found on floors, often combining different patterns in one surface.

Pavements like this from Rievaulx Abbey, Yorkshire, have been prepared since the 12th century.

Their contemporary versions are ideal for smaller decorated surfaces, like fountains, and can be attractively combined with square tiles.
